Notable Projects

Scuola Italiana

As Save Venice prepared to start the restoration of the Scuola Italian in the Jewish Ghetto the next year, I was given the unique opportunity to help with the preliminary research for the restoration. Typically, when I have researched a piece, church, or an artist for an art history class, I have found that most of the research has been done for me by other historians. However, this experience was unique because Scuola Italiana, the poorest scuola in the Jewish Ghetto has historically not been well documented. I am so proud to have been able to contribute to this research as it will not only help to inform Save Venice’s restoration of the Scuola but will also contribute to the information provided to the public at the Museo Ebraico in Venice.

Saint Ursula Cycle

I assisted in the execution of the grand unveiling of the newly restored Saint Ursula Cycle by Carpaccio. These nine paintings are among the most famed pieces within La Galleria dell'Accademia di Venezia. The grand unveiling was held during Save Venice's annual board member trip to Venice and was accompanied by a currator led tour of the Leonardo DaVinci exhibition in La Galleria dell'Accademia.

Basilica Di Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari

Prior to my arriving in Venice, Save Venice had completed ten restoration projects within the Basilica Di Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari, the most notable church in all of Venice. The ongoing restoration project in The Frari was of the altar piece, Titian's Assumption of the Virgin, the largest panel painting in the world.

While research for this project had been completed before my arrival in Venice, I had the opportunity to visit the restoration, climb up the four levels of scaffolding, speak with the  conservators, and witness the conservation.

Basilica Di Santa Maria Assunta

The Basilica Di Santa Maria Assunta is located on the island of Torcello. Torcello was the first Venetian island, however, it is scarcely populated now. The basilica is the oldest surviving structure in all of Venice dating back to the seventh century. Save Venice's restoration of The Basilica Di Santa Maria Assunta includes the exterior and interior wall structures, and the Byzantine mosaics which cover the front and back interior walls

Cheisa de San Sebastiano

One of our more notable restoration projects was the ongoing restoration of Cheisa de San Sebastiano. Cheisa de San Sebastiano is home to a cycle of paintings by Paulo Verenesse as well as paintings by Titian and Tintoretto.

During my time in Venice, focus was placed on the restoration of the chapels as well as the upper level church pews.

David Rosand Library

Much of my summer was spent working and maintaining upkeep of the David Rosand Library which houses over five thousand volumes and a large rare book collection dating back to the 16th century.

As part of my responsibilities I aided in the creation of a future acquisitions list for the library, helped students and historians navigate the library, and utilized the library to research ongoing and future restoration projects.
